The Cajun Critter Quilt? Well, I've found a few little varments to go with it. I have 9 more to find. I'm in no rush. It's a good thing because some of these may be more difficult to find then others. I'm sure I would be able to find them online somewhere, but it's been fun just finding them here and there.
Here are the gator, crab, pelican and possum...or is that oppossum? I'll be looking for a fish, butterfly, frog, mosquito, shrimp, egret, turtle, raccoon and crawfish. YOU KNOW that I am resisting the temptation to just find them all today and purchase them, but I am not going to do that.
I wish I was working in my sewing room today but I have some other things that needs to be done. Soon enough I will have a carefree day and be able to play upstairs with that scrappy quilt or maybe even get Cameron's quilt done??
Happy Weekend!

Happy, to have finished this quilt. Last night I hand basted the binding, washed it and threw it on the bed! Done! Not a beauty, but a utility quilt. That's fine with me.

I am almost done with this spare room. There was no way I could keep this room empty as it would be too depressing. Glad to have an extra bed and my desk to be tucked away instead of in the hub of the house. My plan is to get the boys graduation and wedding pictures up and make a collage on the wall with them all.

My promise to myself was to finish this room so I could finish my closet. Well, we have most of it done. Except for my shoes. They are still all over the floor. I've never counted how many pairs I have but it's safe to say that I have well over 50. I need to find bins to put them in categories but the thought of shopping for the right size, color and shape gives me hives right now. NOT IN THE SHOPPING MOOD. So, when it hits me I'll take care of it. And that's a (new) promise! I have to get my pictures picked out and framed so I have to add that to the shopping list. I like them both. You may be able to see that I used a completely different inner sashing (on the quilt with the blocks set on point) than I had previously considered. Unfortunately, I won't be quilting these in the next month or so. Maybe this summer?

You probably recognize the color-book blocks. I think they originally came from a coloring book? Do you know? I think they are adorable. You can see I used colors on mine instead of embroidery. Quicker and easier! Maybe I'll get to work on it tomorrow if I can ignore the quilt top on my design board.

I made a cutting mistake, of course. Three of the 10 1/2" blocks are pieced. Yuck! Your idea for an alternate block for the ColorBook block quilt was GREAT! I love how it looks. I have plenty of 2 1/2" blocks left over so I will probably use them in a border.

I have some solids left over from that tablecloth I made for the kid's shower that I thought would look good. I don't think I have enough of the medium tones to use for the mini sashings and the darker tones are too dark! Any suggestions? Do you think I should use the same color I used for the alternate blocks? I thought a different fabric would be MORE interesting. I may have to buy a piece of the perfect color. I had a piece of pumpkin color (on the left) that is perfect but don't have enough. I am glad Ginger's is down the road because now I can't keep my hands off this quilt.

Of course, I still want your opinions.

Au Revoir,
VanessaVanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01965871926583666337noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-18292193603188384092012-03-15T13:08:00.008-05:002012-03-15T13:29:24.683-05:00Goat's Milk Soap! Yeah!Today we made soap! But not just any soap. Goat's Milk Soap! I was afraid. Very afraid to try this. I have a friend who used to make soap all the time and sell it but she was never successful with making goat's milk soap so I figured if she couldn't do it than I shouldn't even try it. BUT, I'm trying to cut out all the "Should not's" in my life or at least some of them so herewe went. My daughter was here to help. I bought goat's milk in a can because I have no source for fresh raw milk.

Half the batch I left with no scent so I could maybe make hand milled soap with it later or incase there are some that can't have fragrance, like my grandson. In the other half I added Ylang Ylang and vanilla. Love those two together. Hope it smells good because the goat's milk didn't smell too good while mixing together. You will too when you see some of these soap bars. Your soap making inspired me, T. Well, you legitimately make soap. I do not. I just melt small bars and make bigger ones. Does that count?

Here are all the hotel soaps that we ground and turned into bigger bars. Much. Bigger. Bars. You can see that Scotty's method worked much quicker than the old-fashioned way. We had all the soaps ground to a dust in about 10 minutes. Next time we will do this outside as there was white dust everywhere. Our sinuses were going crazy! I thought for sure he would break the blender but he didn't. His method was better for sure!

The second batch is prettier, I mean less ugly. We smoothed out the second batch after we poured it into the dish. We didn't even bother with the first batch. I think we were so excited it was actually working.

I am sure we broke all the rules of soap melting, but it worked. And that's what counts. It's ugly soap, but it will do its job. I was gonna trash all those little bars anyway. What did I have to lose?

You are the real deal my friend. I can only walk in your shadow! Thanks for the inspiration!

Au revoir,
VanessaVanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01965871926583666337noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-88540409725317190932012-03-08T16:17:00.005-06:002012-03-08T16:30:52.775-06:00Not Much Productivity Here<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEs7s7_OCWzqi-0dHaSZ9dRUDAcIEeX7prdVXX5OLP82dyTc_wtAs3dz9CJqA6ccXZYIMYTHvMmdyf_K6CjV9QpocMnqHywwYKabC0mZPjIi3NtBsTEsGaJL8d1pCvnaXa6LDAxuvU3Gc/s320/Picture+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5717656916042202626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAC0798UIKrpmXHRMpJ5c1PaYSL_ZTkCqA8osar5YhikTKng7LCNd-Ys5LEhTp-zSSEhkG2-tKB8E-toL4S22amJmbvEeJKrf2yh-vTVc0Gej7lk093hDMKKjSHmRM8Ojg3U8cQOsbe1A/s320/Picture+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5717656667371869074" />

...and certainly not anything near what you've been up to!

I had a package from Connecting Threads on my porch when I got back home from school today. I was very happy with what I bought. The colors were just like what I could see online and I was glad I liked everything as much as I did when I ordered it. First, I will quilt the "Lavender" quilt and then work on Cameron's. It's daunting looking at yardage to be cut. I usually work with Fat Quarters so this is some big-girl cutting!

Here is a little pillow I made for the bed. It is raw edge petals cut from fabric that I used in the quilt. They are basted down at the points and secured with a French knot at the opposite end. What is it? I don't know. Just started cutting and working. I think it's kinda cute.

With all the rain this weekend I may get a quilt basted and quilted. Nine forty-five!! It was glorious. I feel incredible! Sleep. Such a natural thing, yet it doesn't happen naturally for me.

Having a great day. The weather is beautiful. Scotty and the boys are working outside. That means that I got to dip out and do some shopping. It was nice to go alone for a change. I got so much done without the distractions.

In the quiet of the trip home from shopping, I was thinking about that little quilt I am working on without the borders. All your talkin' 'bout piano key borders Friday gave me the envie to make them for this little quilt. Also, I will delve into my scraps!

What do you think about piano key borders? Any other ideas?

Have a Super Sunday!
Vanessa

Next on the agenda:
1) Baste, quilt and bind the "Lavender" sashed quilt. I had some BIG BARS of basic goat's milk soap that I had bought from Pennsylvania years ago. The soap was really hard so April helped me grate it and we added hot water and essential oils to it then squeezed it together to make soap balls and cakes. They need to dry out for a few days then we can use them. We have Peppermint, Citrus (which was a blend of Tangerine and Orange essential oils) and Jasmine (which is our favorite).

Funny thing, the Jasmine smells like honeysuckle. I had a perfume in high school that smelled just like it. Brought back memories of drivers ed and high school days just smelling it!

Til we meet again,
TerryTerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12448533344199067144noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-84175027408012007792012-02-28T14:15:00.003-06:002012-02-28T14:27:29.892-06:00Call Me Quick Silver...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2-Gu8dRoMovdFx2SzcD7xzFRzbmApxJjLIFUxASo0cmwh4SaRZ5wztGGEH_HYO0y44PHnXocNsoBB_eWWEXHCFZWQujB-c770-hlMd38UbMxaCN4l8p9osmpWNj7o-8RWpO5PnVvulTI/s320/New+Folder+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714285577508348274" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkM6Ruuy5Y4p7Y4IZferALanVcCTn_1BXRXaq70x2ExF8cIYmBjQyonU700UYgEkNA3wIszIc67rU_ssVUserQXUxIPpxRcdDeXoHk9pAnbMCQ02stBStVBuvwutDOmtF6FvcRtyzztYY/s320/New+Folder+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714285575544473362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnVaaiQ1A6yskhs7J9UdapeofQtJ9NpzPNi1MjOz_R7bjED7f_b6kLI66vt6OjbEGFOXU_nvMuF9fZWZP8eRORdkeYDIm9vD0nNdLxI8q_lY_auoohG5l8tXaAXG7eEuJtQF-tV-uY2c4/s320/New+Folder.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714284663199880162" />
...or NOT! It's been forever!

I am so happy that school break is here. Not that I love the sweltering heat down here in Louisiana, but being away from school for two whole months makes my heart dance. I know, I shouldn't be that excited....but I truly am. I am already working on some projects that need to get done by summer's end. I hope that I can have at least one quilt done by the end of this week. I have several tops complete, 4 to be exact, that need to be quilted. Once I get backing and batting I have no excuse not to get them basted and quilted, right?

Terry, I am hoping to get some visits in with you my dear friend. We always have things to catch up on as our visits aren't as often as we would both like. Hopefully, I will have a quilt to show this week. Hopefully.

'Til We Meet Again,
VanessaVanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01965871926583666337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-7665625564419790742010-02-02T16:51:00.003-06:002012-03-15T13:31:07.614-05:00

I finished getting the pieced border on today. The red April picked up was the backing for another quilt. One of the babies in need quilts. It was pieced together and everything. Oh well, we auditioned other fabrics. I dug into the Rag Quilt bin and found these. The first two pictures show a small red border and a very light pink with small dots. You can see it better in the second picture.

These two pictures have the brighter pink next to the small red border and April put some two inch squares on top to get the idea of four patches. Some old log cabin blocks I started a long time ago. I have 30 blocks. The blocks measure 6 inches finished. They don't look like regular log cabin blocks because I didn't follow the usual light and dark diagonal design. Which now presents a problem, sort of. I think I want to put sashing because the blocks are small and I want to make at least a lap size out of this. And I will also put some borders on it. I'm thinking of using the left over strips and making a pieced border. Not sure what yet but that will come later. Now I need to decide a color for the sashing. The blocks are very busy and the centers are all the same red fabric. I'm not sure what color would pull all of this together and I know that it is hard to decide with a picture instead of in person but HELP! What would you think? What color would you use? I'm thinking of making the sashing 2 or 2-1/2 inches wide and maybe using the same fabric as the sashing to place my border blocks in as if they were floating in this fabric.

I may make some four patch blocks or piano key or sawtooth. I'm not sure yet but I want to use up all the extra strips.

Here are two close ups of the blocks so you could get a better idea of the fabrics I used. They are very bright and scrappy and busy. I don't think a beige or tan color would look good. It would have to be a bright like the rest of the fabrics just not a busy one. Maybe even a solid or something that comes off as a solid. What do you think?

I'm glad to be done with these blocks. I still would like to give it to them but it has to be at least lap size.
Til we meet again,
Terry

Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12448533344199067144noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-63593776786303508552010-01-15T21:35:00.006-06:002010-01-15T22:38:25.721-06:00Pillows, Rug & Shams, Oh My!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV_Ht0PZ_r8cEWXzsY4KX6bqAzcqSLhksy5mfEJHjSGxrLErs0c6POtIlLfHsK1j-lmmfWyiaAQ8iNWYnQuikzDwQ7ypCxPbxfcdCnsWfyX1CkbWm_dBfC3lwlwysPr-EH2eKqTfGzJIw/s320/rug.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427191935628481346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD8Vn-AMohejHycrVIqoW_PCwUXZe21TmdT7x5dOuHVfweJQr1iEnVxrw7WwqocK6hS5ZKThXyfpXAsqLx7X3rVDc9EwGmDVJq7FebsK9wFBwme14aEoDRqSuCM4OrNVXH4i9LpZgJ-fA/s320/bird+pillow.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427191268192451522" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3jbBVS9swM0sLaGDGjABZAjzEQcRog1T8TIvz8_QVq0ceFpopI767WC_VnldPHkHygN69RjwsjUB9s5v5YU521aczi6jMaKHvKayVybh6FLcG4bBSMZH0VKQeuvpIFFXIoveI6WWif6k/s320/pillow4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427191265970478194" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggPngWRNwWh-nSXU5_-krAHn8WeaKFKgVD9fSsj-Tsdk_7mhcOyxLwSbU8AghHbVoIo3HDsB9rOgs-XyHDKCxtFkFTiAd-r01mGhjuIiXhxLPREJdq8QT7QpISYT1Mg6N1AL9RsUxViPA/s320/pillow3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427191259591215842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI-EsR7Nq9TryBltUF5PBsphYqiGoCTuXV017sMTuD_77He03ikXSUEL0zDx3uvGYjI1z3ClF9rAxtmNTxfN_viJKlzmpBTbQo-rOVv9w1WLRtmR61ZrkNThjcbidh1BlmXmlo_FgMuXw/s320/pillow2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427191255988991442" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOc9rnVa2uqhxRUhRbeTgKsm3CAkeDRxhKDhG5FysnR4BS_DY6EBSvCrd2AbJbgE4XGDyY2I_kZ1OqEalponGRqJKAtQFCPNzv83JvJ3MgrFbLGiCrZHDEYkslDIZx01_VVNPkNwipQyA/s320/pillow1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427191253589533810" />
I made a few pillows today after we got off the phone. I needed to cover a "recently acquired" pillow form to go with two smaller pillows I made a few years ago. You will recognize them from the needlepunch that I did while in Houston years ago. I used some different colors in the new one but tried to match the other two without being so obvious. I used some pieces of scraps and bits from my box of orphans. The light green fabric is what I used on the back of the new pillow. It's nothing special but better than "the original".

The other picture is of a sham and throw pillow that will go on my bed. I had a left over block from my bed quilt and used it for the pillow. The fabric on the front of the sham is leftover from the borders of the quilt. The back is the same light color in the quilt. I wanted something really simple to go behind the throw pillow. It only took me about an hour to make them both. Now that's my kind of craft! I also got some new pillow cases which are cream, khaki and chocolate brown. I will look for two store bought pillows to go on each side...maybe something in a silk. I love that look of the silk and the patchwork together.

I included a picture of my new rug and the pillow I told you about. I have since put that pillow back in the store bag along with the receipt. You may not be able to tell from the photo but it is too bright. I will be patient and shop for something that looks better.

I included a picture of my rug. I don't know if the pictures does it any justice.

Pillows for my living room sofa are my next project. I will also begin an online search for chair covers and ottoman covers. Wish me luck!

'Til We Meet Again,
VanessaVanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01965871926583666337noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-90511259686553553122010-01-15T16:24:00.004-06:002012-03-15T13:33:00.900-05:00

Here is the bag I was working on today. It was easy to put together and fast! It is a Child's Activity Bag. I got the pattern from Moda Bake Shop. Designer Melissa Stramel. I had a slight problem with the fabric amounts. The pattern says you need 1/2 yard of coordinating fabric for the lining and extra pieces. I had a piece that was 18x43 inches. Should have been enough to cut out all the extra pieces but it wasn't. I emailed the designer and she emailed me back and suggested I cut the handles out smaller and I did and it worked out fine. She said Moda must have sent her a piece that was bigger than a half yard . I appreciate the quick response from Melissa. Anyway, this is the front of the bag. I put some crayons in the pockets and a color book inside.

This is the coordinating fabric I used for the lining, outside pocket and handles. I was supposed to do this baking today while MY HONEY was at work but I didn't have any brown sugar and MY HONEY was going to the store after work. So after supper we started. The first pic is the sugar cookies. MY HONEY is learning how to roll to help me out. He did a great job (maybe I can convince him to do the whole thing next year, HA!)

Next we have the tin of gingerbread men. I did make those this afternoon because the dough was already made and in the fridge. I will bring all the cookies to my daughter's house for Christmas eve and my children along with the nieces and nephews will decorate them. They love to do this every year and will not let me forget it.

The last pic is the dining room table with some Chocolate Pecan Clusters (OH, so Good!) and some of the sugar cookies cooling. I already have the chocolate chip cookies boxed up in the tins you see there on the table.

Not really what I expected to do this evening. I thought I would be all done by now but that is the way it is. You gotta roll with the punches. At least now all the baking is just about done. Tomorrow I will mix up a double batch of icing and color it to bring with the cookies and make some fudge, easy. I'm ready for Christmas! How about you?

BTW, the little quilt you see kinda folded up on the table was made for me last year by my very best friend and I love it just as much now as I did then. Doesn't it look great? Thank you, friend.
Til we meet again,
Terry

Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12448533344199067144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119455105890081173.post-5913120845150287602009-12-19T10:48:00.003-06:002009-12-19T10:52:55.413-06:00My Beautiful Beast<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD1ysDRyIvlVQQauSkYp3avTQ0i962i-duHkpB6lvOf_lol_Qza_kbR3ch8wECLqwILwEUxLtT4DrMmynHf_r7bfFFOoagXhYpp2POp_FvrlfjDzClumtoNqv30wo0_iapC2t7qTpBs9A/s320/bed+quilt.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416991129819513506" />
I must confess....I slept with The Beast last night.
